Collar, Order of the Sword, Sweden.

Please find attached the order collar for the Swedish Royal Order of the Sword. It is made of gilded silver and polychrome enamel. This item was produced by Gustaf Stafhell the Younger, who was based in Stockholm. It was hallmarked in 1763 and again in 1765. The decorative elements include alternating Amazon shields covered with blue-enamelled antique helmets and swords with pendants. The weight of the product is approximately 262 grams.

The chain of the order in question is of the type that could be ordered personally by a commander of the Order of the Sword, and as it was personal property, it did not need to be returned upon the wearer's death. Commanders who did not wish to order their own chain could borrow one in burnished bronze from the Treasury when wearing it was recommended.

This collar was sold today at the Uppsala Auktionskammare auction in Stockholm today (2025.06.11).  Hammer price was 6800€ pluss extras.

KINGDOM OF SWEDEN Royal Order of the Sword [Kungliga Svärdorden]. 2nd model (1772-1975), order column, probably made by the company C. F. Carlman in Stockholm, probably from the third quarter of the 20th century, consisting of 10 sword and 10 shield links (with helmet), non-ferrous metal gilded and partly gilded. enamelled, without jewel, in the original octagonal award case. BWK4 250; ZK2 3412.

II On 23 February 1748, King Fredrik I of Sweden (1676-1751, reigned since 1720) founded the Military Order of Merit, which initially consisted of two classes (Commander and Knight), together with the Royal Order of Seraphim and the Royal Order of the Sword.

In 1772, King Gustav III (1746-1792, reigned since 1771) reorganized the order by endowing a Grand Cross (whereby the holders of this class were and are called "Commander with Grand Cross"). In 1788 he founded the class of Knights with the Grand Cross 1st Class of the Order of the Sword (Knight's Cross on the neck with an upright sword on the left breast) in times of war, which was expanded by King Charles XIII (1748-1818, r. since 1809) in 1814 to include the class of Knights with the Grand Cross of the Order of the Sword (Knight's Cross on the neck with crossed swords on the left breast).

On 26 June 1850, King Oscar I (1799-1859, reigned since 1844) endowed the Affiliated Sword Mark and the Affiliated Sword Medal for non-commissioned officers and enlisted men. In May 1875, Emperor Wilhelm I (1797-1888, King of Prussia since 1861, German Emperor since 1871) was awarded a gold sword medal by King Oscar II (1829-1907, reigned since 1872), which had also been donated in 1860, but was only awarded once, to Kaiser Wilhelm I. King Carl XV (1826-1872, reigned since 1859) donated a breast star as commander in 1860, and King Oscar II divided the commanders into commanders 1st class (with breast star) and commanders 2nd class (without breast star, called "commander" from 1952) on the occasion of his coronation in 1873, the latter being reserved for foreigners until 25 September 1889.

As early as 1871, the breast stars embroidered until then had been officially transformed into metal stars, whose arm surfaces were brilliant until 1919, scaled from 1919 to 1951 and smooth since then. With the new statutes of 25 November 1889, the knight class was also divided into knights 1st class and knights 2nd class (from 1952 called "knights"), the latter initially also reserved for foreigners. In 1896, the sword sign without swords was donated by King Oscar II.

On March 22, 1952, King Gustav VI Adolf (1882-1973, reigned since 1951) issued new statutes with which a three-class affiliated war cross of the Order of the Sword was established
