Product Description

The Royal Order of Vasa (Kungliga Vasaorden) is a distinguished order of merit bestowed by the Kingdom of Sweden. The first model (1772–1860) features a knight's insignia [riddartecken] with a crown, or a reduction of the commander's insignia [kommendörstecken] with a crown. It measures 54.2 x 21.0 mm, is made of gold, partially engraved and chased, partially enamelled, and weighs 11.7 g. It is attached to a fluted ribbon ring with old ribbon, which is 39 mm wide.

This item is from the estate of Daniel Grand d'Hauteville (1761-1818 or 1828), who was a banker to the Royal Swedish Court.

The badge was carried by court forester Israel Adolf af Ström, who worked in Stockholm (1778-1856), and was RVO with diamonds on 5 January 1829. The sign cost 600 Rd banco in 1829, which was paid for from Djurgarden's forestry funds. In 1925, it was purchased by LRK for 1000:- from the grandson, Major Oscar Adolf Richard af Ström, Sjötorp, Kärda sn, Värnamo (1867-1952).
 
The sign features a gold vase surrounded by an oval silver ring set with 29 brilliant-cut diamonds, surmounted by a double-sided oval gold-edged ring with red enamel, inscribed in gold with the inscription 'GUSTAF THE THIRD DESIGNER MDCCLXXII'. Beyond this, an oval silver ring set with 39 brilliants is positioned at the bottom, and a leaf ornament set with 12 diamonds is set at the top. At the top, a fixed ring with a holder, flanked by wings, is set with 19 brilliants. Attached to the ring is a silver oval band ring, set on the front with five brilliants.All the stones are set à jour, and the sign is double-sided, but the stones only appear on one side.
This sign was worn by the court bailiff Israel Adolf af Ström (1778-1856), RVO with brilliants, on 5 January 1829. The sign cost 600 Rd banco in 1829, which was paid from Djurgarden's forest funds. This Wasa knight has a gold and enamel center piece.  The rest of the knight seems to be a gilted and enamel version.

The hinge below the crown is the upside down version of the version that is much more common.
