Serafimer Badge

Order of the Serafim

Sweden

1748-2025

This chapter will be including about 40 different Serafimer Badges. I have been looking and digging for information through the last 30 years to understand a bit of this history. My focus is to display the variations of these beautiful pieces of art.

I must thank the huge inventory at Livrustkammaren in Stockholm Sweden. They have a huge collection of historical pieces with historical information.  As you see on this page a lot of the photos are still in black and white. Hopefully one day one will have more of these photos in high resolution color.  They have iincluded the history of these pieces and on many the dimensions are included. Unfortunately the weight of the pieces are missing. I am sure this will be available one day.

The Livrustkammaren is located next to the Royal Castle in Stockholm. I have visited their exhibitions several times. Very nice and and very interesting. About 20 years ago I was to have meetings with them and also having a real look at their vaults.  Unfortuntely Radon gas had been measured at too high levels and the old vaults were closed for all visits for years.  Still we had some very good meetings and discussed their collection of orders.  Since then they have moved their photos from their old website and now you find most of it on Wikimedia Commons, Europeana, Omnia.ie, etc.  Hopefully what you find there will be on these pages, plus alot more.

This is a part of the wall decoration in the Seraphim room at the royal Castle in Stockholm Sweden. Of course this has never been awarded:-) But it is a very good example to show the very old types with a small chain as a hinge between the crown and the badge.

The King purchased the oldest Order of the Seraphim.
Martin Laurell, CEO of Hallands Auktionsverk in Halmstad, is pleased to announce the acquisition. This is the day after one of his almost monthly auctions. Yesterday's auction was notable for the sale of a Seraphim Order from 1754 at a price of SEK 100,000-125,000.
This is the oldest known iteration of the order, distinguished by its dimensions, which are approximately three centimetres larger than subsequent variants, and its weight, which is 95 grams. The material is enamel and 18-carat red gold.

The highest honour awarded by the Swedish state is to be appointed a Knight and Commander of the Order of the Royal Majesty of Sweden (RoKKMO), colloquially known as the Order of the Seraphim.
The coat of arms of Staël von Holstein is displayed below. It is a relatively uncommon item to become available on the market. The Order is currently only bestowed upon members of the Swedish Royal Family (most recently Prince Daniel) and foreign heads of state and their equivalents. It should be noted that Swedish citizens who are not members of the royal family are no longer eligible to receive this honour after 1975.

It is extremely challenging to locate one from the mid-18th century. To the best of my knowledge, no museum owns it. This is potentially the earliest example ever to have been offered. In 1754, just six years after the Order's inception, this example was bestowed upon Baron Georg Bogislaus Staël von Holstein.

There was considerable interest in the sale, but the identity of the purchaser remains unknown. Five telephone lines were connected and the gavel finally fell on 310,000 SEK (+ fees). The buyer was His Majesty the King, although it is unlikely that he was holding the handset.
