The Order of the Dannebrog. Grand Cross with Chain
Established in 1671 by Christian V as a 'revival' of an ancient order. Inspired by the myth of the Dannebrog flag falling from the sky in 1219, the order's chain alternates between the letters C5, representing the founder Christian V, and W, representing Valdemar Sejr, the king who received the flag. This example was made in 1693, possibly by Paul Kurtz. It was first worn by Christian V and is still worn by the Grand Master (the monarch) on special occasions. His Majesty the King has started the tradition of wearing the chain together with the Order of the Elephant chain at the New Year's reception on 1 January.

Denmark, Kingdom. An Order of Dannebrog, Collar, c. 1780
The Christian VIII issue was established in 1671 by King Christian V, and originally inaugurated by King Valdemar II in 1219. This is a bronze gilt cast collar composed of 72 double sided links, 36 portray crosses composed of white enamel with a red wax-like material around the edges, alternating between 18 crowned "W" cyphers for King Valdemar II and 18 crowned "C" cyphers for King Christian V in alternating directions, each link Each link exhibits hand-engraved details, with the central "C" link featuring a single loop for badge suspension. The collar's total length is 1289mm, and the cross links measure 14.54mm (w) x 19.77mm (h), while the "C" links measure 11.48mm (w) x 22.8mm. 4mm (h), "W" links measure 14.69mm (w) x 22.37mm (h), with a weight of 206 grams. Four bottom connection rings have been replaced adjacent to the central link. The red wax and white enamelling are quite poor, with chipping and blotting, light wear and contact marks. The item is in near very fine condition.
The item is accompanied by a purpose-made hardshell case, composed of wood with a brown leather exterior and embossed designs on all sides (darkened along the top). The interior features a silk lid and fitted green velvet inserts that allow the collar to stand upright and switchback. The gilt wire interwoven with bullion that borders the inserts is of particular note. 360mm (w) x 71mm I) x 43mm (d). The obverse exterior features two hook and eye clasps at each edge, while the interior silk is heavily soiled and is tearing along the hinge. The clasps are in working order, but there is wear to the exterior edges and around the hooks. There is residue on the bottom, and the item is in near-very fine condition.
