Awarded to : Agathon Stenersen Nikolin

Agathon Stenersen Nickolin (born 27 November 1826 in Store Heddinge, died 22 January 1910 in Copenhagen) was a Danish officer. If I'm not mistaken, he was the son of retired major Herman Nickolin (1774 - 31 October 1852) and his first wife, Catharina Amalia Smidt (1782 - 1807). I believe he married for a second time in 1805 to Karen Sophie Hauberg (1795 - 1877). He became a land cadet in 1839, second lieutenant in 1844 (with seniority from 1843) and in 1845 was employed at the 7th Battalion, with which he participated as an adjutant in the Three Years' War and was involved in most of the skirmishes and battles. In 1849, he was honoured with the title of first lieutenant and Knight of the Order of the Dannebrog. He was particularly distinguished during the defense of Frederiksstad, when he became a company commander. Following the peace treaty, Nickolin had the opportunity to contribute to various departments, and in 1855, he was honoured to be selected as a school officer and instructor in exercises at the Landcadet Corps. Following his appointment as captain of the 2nd class in 1860 (1st class in 1862), he joined the 15th Battalion and participated in the defense of Dybbøl and Als in 1864 with the 15th Regiment.

From 1864 to 1870, he was employed at the 21st and 15th Battalions, after which he had the privilege of moving to Aarhus as chief of staff at the 1st Jutland Brigade. In 1873, he was honoured to be called to the Ministry of War as head of department, and was soon after promoted to colonel. After six years of administrative work, Nickolin decided to step down from the ministry in 1879, at a time when the Minister of War, Wilhelm Kauffmann, was looking to bring new perspectives to the ministry (J.J. Bahnson) with the aim of aligning with the modern fortification of Copenhagen. It is understood that Nickolin was appointed as commander of the Life Guards Line Battalion and, in 1883, as commander of the 3rd Regiment. Following a six-year tenure in administrative roles, Nickolin departed from the ministry in 1879 when the Minister of War, Wilhelm Kauffmann, sought to introduce a fresh perspective in the ministry (J.J. Bahnson) with the objective of modernising Copenhagen's fortifications. Nickolin was appointed Commander of the Life Guard Line Battalion and, in 1883, Commander of the 3rd Regiment. He was promoted to the rank of Major General in 1885 and became Commander of the 1st Jutland Brigade in 1888, Commander of the 1st Zealand Brigade in 1891, and Inspector General of the Infantry in 1893. He was inducted into the Order of Dannebrog as a Knight in 1875, elevated to the rank of Commander 2nd Class in 1879, and subsequently promoted to the rank of Commander 1st Class in 1886. Nickolin concluded his military career as Lieutenant General and Commanding General of the 2nd General Command District from 1895 to 1896, subsequent to being honoured with the Grand Cross in 1894 and being appointed Chamberlain in 1879.

Throughout the course of his extensive career, Nickolin has occupied numerous positions that have demanded a high level of trust. In 1871, he was seconded to the Prussian army in France, and in 1883, he participated in military exercises in Sweden. In 1878, he became a member of a commission established by the Ministry of Finance to revise the salary laws for all ministries. In 1884, he became a member of a service regulations commission, and in 1890, he assumed the role of chairman of a commission tasked with commenting on the ammunition supply for the 8 mm rifles. In 1883, he was attached to the Russian Emperor Alexander III, and in 1888 to the Austrian Archduke Wilhelm during the latter's visit to Copenhagen.
Nickolin married Ellena Harriet Schiødte Philipsen (born 29 November 1838 in Copenhagen; died 18 July 1906 in the same place), who was the daughter of merchant Christian Arnold Philipsen (1808-1860) and Belle Hanne Sara Emma Schiødte (1814-1854).

Following a six-year tenure in the administrative division, Nickolin departed from the ministry in 1879 when the Minister of War, Wilhelm Kauffmann, expressed a desire for fresh perspectives within the ministry (J.J. Bahnson) with the objective of modernising Copenhagen's fortifications. Nickolin was appointed Commander of the Life Guard Line Battalion, and in 1883, Commander of the 3rd Regiment. He was promoted to the rank of Major General in 1885, and subsequently assumed the role of Commander of the 1st Jutland Brigade in 1888, Commander of the 1st Zealand Brigade in 1891, and Inspector General of the Infantry in 1893.

He is interred in Garnison Cemetery.
