On 12 October 1671, the first award of the Order of Dannebrog took place at Rosenborg Castle.

Knights of the Order of the Dannebrog, known at the time as ‘White Knights’ because of their white ribbons with red edges, were the only class in the Order of the Dannebrog. When Frederik VI expanded the Order of the Dannebrog in 1808 to include more classes, the order could then be awarded to a wider circle, which became the foundation for the Order of the Dannebrog we know today. However, there have been a number of minor changes and adaptations along the way. One of the most significant changes occurred in 1951, when Frederik the 9th decided that women could also be decorated in the Order of Dannebrog.

Order of the Dannebrog, unofficial Grand Cross Star of enamelled silver made by C. F. Rothe in Vienna. Beautiful example made by C.F. Rothe. Small size! Awarded to Ludvig Castenskiold (24.8.1823-30.9.1905. Geheimkonferensråd, kammerherre, ritmester, hoffchef hos Dr Louise SK DM) by Prince Hans in 1888. The Dannebrog Star was later given to his son Anton (born 11 January 1860) as a gift. In about 1964 it is owned by Ove Pontoppidan. It is sold from his wife at Bruun-Rasmussen auctions 12.12.2006.

Castenskiold, Ludvig, 1823-1905, Officer. C., brother of the above-mentioned General Gustav C., was born on 24 August 1823 in Slagelse, became a cadet in 1836, Repetent and Page in 1840 and obtained the rank of Second Lieutenant from 1 Nov. After leaving the academy in 1842, he entered the gymnastic institute and was then employed by the 2. Dragon Regiment, which was garrisoned in Holstein. At the outbreak of war in 1848 the regiment went over to the rebels; C. C. was taken prisoner and only released after half a year, as he would not give his word of honour not to serve against the rebels. In the autumn of 1848, C. was commissioned. For service with the combined squadrons on the Schleswig-Jutland border, was then employed with the 4. Dragonregiment and after his appointment as First Lieutenant in 1849, he was assigned to the Gardehusardivision. With this division he carried out a daring attack on an enemy-held redoubt east of the town, close to the road, at General Schleppegrell's command in the Battle of Kolding. The greater part of the horsemen and horses were dashed to the ground by a devastating volley, and C. A horse was shot from under him, but otherwise he escaped unharmed from this brilliant attack, for which he received the Knight's Cross. Later he took part in the battles of Gudsø, Fredericia and Isted -- In 1854 C. was ordered to the Riding School in Vienna, but at the end of the year he was recalled and employed as Adjutant at the I. Cavalry Brigade under the command of the then Prince Christian, whom he followed when the Prince became Chief of the Cavalry.

25. On 25 October 1857, C. married Ida Sophie Vilhelmine Grevenkop-Castenskiold, daughter of Chamberlain, Major Jørg. Fr. Johs. G.-C. To Store og Lille Frederikslund, and the following year he was awarded the rank of Rite Master, while he was appointed to this rank in 1859. When King Christian IX came to the throne, C. C. was employed as Adjutant to the King, and in 1866 he was appointed Chamberlain. The same year he was retired from the army with a pension and was then appointed Chamberlain in the service of Queen Louise; in 1879 he became Head of Court to the same Queen, a position in which he still serves. C., who is decorated with a large number of foreign orders, was awarded the Grand Cross of the Danish Cross in 1888 -- d. 30. Sept. 1905.

The Order of the Dannebrog Grand Cross set 1 Classe- RRR+

Grand Cross set 1 Classe König Christian V 1671 1863-1905

Made by: Godet in Berlin

Silber gilted + Emaille: 66,7/23 g
Star: 84x84 mm
Badge: 81 x 41 mm

The Order of the Dannebrog (Danish: Dannebrogordenen) is an Order of Denmark, instituted in 1671 by Christian V. It resulted from a move in 1660 to break the absolutism of the nobility [citation needed]. Until 1808. membership in the order was limited to fifty members of noble or royal rank who formed a single class known as White Knights to distinguish them from the Blue Knights who were members of the Order of the Elephant. In 1808, the Order was reformed and divided into four classes, with the ranks:

Grand Commander (Storkommandor) — wears the badge with diamonds on a necklet (gentlemen) or on a bow (ladies), plus the star on the left chest: First Order class

Grand Cross (Storkors) — wears the badge on a collar or on a sash on the right shoulder. plus the star on the left chest; Second Order class

Commander 1st Class (Kommandor af 1. grad) — wears the breast cross on the left chest. plus (for gentlemen) the badge on a neck ribbon; Commander (Kommandor) — wears the badge on a neck ribbon (gentlemen) or on a bow (ladies); Third Order class Knight 1st Class (Ridder af 1. grad) — wears the badge on a ribbon (gentlemen) or on a bow (ladies) with rosette on the left chest;

Knight 1st Class (Ridder af 1. grad) wears the badge on a ribbon (gentlemen) or on a bow (ladies) with rosette on the left chest: Knight (Ridder) wears the badge on a ribbon (gentlemen) or on a bow (ladies) on the left chest.

The Grand Cross can: as a special honor be awarded "with diamonds". There is also a Cross of Honour (D.Ht.) (Dannebrogordens Hederstegn).

The Grand Commander class is reserved to persons of princely origin. It is only awarded to Royals with close family ties with the Danish Royal House. The statute of the Order was amended in 1951 by a Royal Ordinance so that both men and women could be members of the Order.

Today, the Order of the Dannebrog is a means of honouring and rewarding the faithful servants of the modern Danish State for meritorious civil or military service, for a particular contribution to the arts. Sciences or business life or for those working for Danish interests.

The badge of the Order is a white enamelled Dannebrog cross (i.e., a cross pattée. the lower arm being longer than the others) with a red enamelled border. for the Knights in silver and for everyone else in gold or silver gilt. At the top of this cross is the royal cypher of the bestowing monarch crowned with the distinctive Danish royal crown On its front, the cross bears the royal cyphers of Christian V at its centre. as well as the motto of the Order: Gud og Kongen (God and the King) on its arms. On its reverse are found the crowned royal cyphers of Valdemar II Sejr Christian V and Frederik VI. as well as the years 1219. 1671 and 1808. the years that each of them ascended the Danish throne. In each of the four angles of the cross is found a small Danish royal crown.

The collar of the Order is made of gold with small enamelled Dannebrog crosses alternating with alternating crowned royal cyphers representing Kings Valdemar II Sejr and Christian V. the reputed and actual founders of the Order. When the collar is worn the sash is not worn.

The star of the Order is an eight-pointed silver star with straight rays with an enamelled Dannebrog cross (similar to the front of the badge but without the royal cypher above and the royal crowns between the arms of the cross) at the centre.

The breast cross of the Order is similar to the cross on the star but larger and with faceted silver instead of white enamel and without the silver rays of the star.

The ribbon of the Order is white silk moiré with red borders, the national colours of Denmark.

The Order originally had a distinctive habit worn by the knights (after 1808. by the Knights Grand Cross) on very solemn occasions. The habit consisted of a white doublet, white breeches. white stockings and white shoes, over which was wom a red mantle with a white lining and with the star of the order embroidered in silver on its left side. Over this red mantle was worn a short white shoulder cape with a standing collar embroidered in gold. upon which was worn the collar of the Order (the habit was always worn with the collar and never with the ribbon of the Order). The habit also had a black hat with a plume of white and red ostrich feathers. This habit was almost identical to that worn by the knights of the Order of the Elephant.
