Order of the Sword

Sweden

1850-1975

The Sword Medal will come here. Not ready yet.

Sorry!

The Sword Medal is a Swedish decoration from the Order of the Sword, established on 26 June 1850 by King Oscar I. It was created to recognise outstanding service and merit in the Swedish armed forces, with the Sword Badge being bestowed upon individuals who had served for at least 16 years without any disciplinary issues. From 1972-1974, the medal was also awarded to platoon commanders. The obverse bears the inscription 'King and Country' and the reverse 'For Meritorious Service'.The medal is silver and is worn on the chest in the yellow ribbon of the Order of the Sword with blue edges. The 550 oldest medallists received an annual pension of SEK 15 from the Invalid House Fund. The Gold Sword Medal has only been awarded once. During a state visit in 1875, Emperor William was presented with a unique sword medal, minted in gold, by King Oscar II.

Following the reform of the Order in 1975, the Sword Medal was discontinued. However, the introduction of the Reward Reform in 2023 led to the establishment of the new statutes of the Order of the Sword, which now permit the Sword Medal to be awarded once more.
