description The knight's badge of the Order of the North Star in a black ribbon, the ribbon from the 1770s at the latest. See Lenk, T.: ‘Linnés Nordstjärna’, Livrustkammaren 1941, p. 102, where Lenk describes the development regarding the wearing of the knight's badge from 1748 to the 1770s, which mainly consists in the fact that the ribbon from the beginning, closest to the knight's badge, was tied in a bow, which in France adorned the knight's breast ribbon in the military Order of St Louis, which was established in 1693.

History:
Registered in January 1907 by Carl Lagerberg, following the Brusewitz catalogue, the object was then given a new number: GM:7.

The badge was donated to the Gothenburg Museum, which was founded in 1861, in August 1863 by Colonel Count Adolf Eugène von Rosen. The Gothenburg Post of 14 August 1863 stated: ‘The Gothenburg Museum has these days received a rather strange gift, namely. The by our great naturalist professor Carl v. Linné the Elder. Burna Nordstjärneorden, which is accompanied by written certificates of its authenticity. As the zoological section of our museum is adorned with the portrait of the world-famous scientist, it is also in order that the medal section can display the same badge of honour, which in his time was not so neglected as now.’

Fil. Dr Torsten Lenk, later superintendent and head of the Royal Armoury, wrote in Livrustkammaren, writes in his typological article on the development of the Swedish insignia in ‘Livrustkammaren’ pp. 96-108, 1941, entitled ‘Linnaeus’ North Star’, writes the following about the history of the insignia and the circumstances surrounding its acquisition by the Gothenburg Museum. ‘It was presented as a memorial to the executor of the estate, who was Linnaeus‘ disciple, the well-known surgeon Johan Gustav Acrel, who at the time of Linnaeus’ death in 1778 [was] assistant professor of medicine at Uppsala University. By 1867 it had been donated to the Gothenburg Museum by Baron Oscar Dickson's father-in-law, Colonel Count Adolf Eugen von Rosen, the railway builder. Attached to the badge was a certificate signed by the civil engineers Borge and Robert Acrel and dated 28 June 1848, in which these gentlemen state the birth of the mortuary and that the gift to their grandfather had always been kept in the family. On 2 June 1863, Robert Acrel's two sisters certified before the notary in Stockholm both the handwriting of their brother's and cousin's signatures and the identity of the Order's seal. This may therefore be regarded as having been satisfactorily proved.’

It is reasonable to assume that the Acrel sisters' certificate before the notary in Stockholm was made because von Rosen was about to donate the badge to the Gothenburg Museum, which also happened in August 1863, according to the article in GP 1863-08-14. Lenk's statement that the badge was donated to the museum no later than 1867 originates from the fact that Gustaf Henrik Brusewitz (director of the Historical and Ethnographic Department) published a guide to the Historical and Ethnographic Collections of the Gothenburg Museum in 1867

This is believed to have originated from the deathbed of King Karl XIV Johan of Sweden, who was born in Pau. This was subsequently bestowed by his grandson, who would later become Swedish king. This was subsequently consigned with other orders from the new king to the Swedish Archbishop and remained in the family's possession until the 1960s. Subsequently, the coin and order dealer Ahlstrøm was able to purchase the aforementioned assets from the descendants of the Archbishops. As Ahlstrøm became increasingly unwell in his later years, Strandberg assumed responsibility for the organisation of these items, which consequently came into my possession. It is a frequently expressed opinion that this piece was also likely to have been adorned with a diamond studded crown. Naturally, however, there is an absence of any evidence to support this hypothesis, as well as for any alternative hypotheses.

Following the demise of King Karl Johan in 1844, it was stipulated that one of his orders be carried out. It is hypothesised that the production date is situated between 1820 and 1840, on the basis that the arms of the object in question are tipped with round ball-type features.

This version of the North Star has a few new issues.
1. The hinge below the main crown is installed upside down. Interesting effect.
2. The small crowns beween the main arms are very low and have very clear derilled holed through the top of the crown.

Difficukt to establish a date for the production of this one.

Description
The Royal Order of the North Star (Kungliga Nordstjärneorden) is a distinguished Swedish order. The Knight's medal is set with diamonds and gold enamel, partially set 'à jour' with 85 (of originally 87) old-cut diamonds or diamond roses (one missing, the stone of the orb above the crown replaced by a similar stone), with hairline cracks in the white enamel. It is attached to the original old breast ribbon, with a total weight of 16.7 g, and is stored in the original old award case of the jeweller Christian Hammer in Stockholm.

RRRR II was sold at auction 49 of Ahlströms Myntauktioner AB in Stockholm on 9 and 10 April 1994. The catalogue number was 1788. Prior to that, it was sold at auction at Christies in London on 30 April 1991. The catalogue number for that sale was 188.

This is an exemplar of the highest production quality and is in outstanding condition. It is also of exceptional rarity. Since its foundation by King Carl XIV Johann (1763-1844, reigned since 1818), the order is said to have been awarded in this form (always as a personal gift from the king!) only 18 times to date. According to the available information, it was awarded by King Carl XV (1826-1872, reigned since 1859) in 1868 to Professor Gustaf Ljunggren (1823-1905), Rector of Lund University, on the occasion of the university's bicentenary.

We are aware of three other instances of knighthood decorations with diamonds: the first was awarded to the Swedish geographer and explorer Sven Hedin (1865-1952) in 1901 by King Oskar II (1829-1907) while he was on his second Central Asian expedition (1899-1902). The piece is currently located in the Livrustkammaren in Stockholm, along with his other honours (inv. no. LRK 514). (Cf: Christian Thorén
Upptäcktsresanden: Sven Hedins ordenstecken i Kungliga Livrustkammarens samlingar In: Livrustkammaren - Journal of the Royal Armoury 1997-98). The second specimen, which is also in the Livrustkameren, was awarded to the admiral and explorer Adolf Arnold Louis Palander af Vega (1842-1920) on 27 January 1880 (cf. Löfström in LÖF, p. 425, fig. 255). The third copy was sold at an auction in Helsinki some time ago by Bukowski.

Gustaf Håkan Jordan Ljunggren was born in Lund on 6 March 1823. Following his studies in philosophy, he assumed the roles of professor of aesthetics, literature and art history at the University of Lund, a position he held from 1859 to 1889. During this time, he also served as rector of the university, from 1867 to 1868 and from 1877 to 1885. He has published numerous works. He passed away on 31 August 1905 at the age of 82.
