Type/subset: Diploma
Owner      : Collection Cicoia
Awarded to : Johan Frederik Leth

Date       : 1801.12.18

Johan Frederik (de) Leth (2 June 1737 at Vejrupgård – 7 March 1817 in Kiel) was a Danish officer.
He was the son of Lieutenant General Mathias Leth and joined the 2nd Funen Cavalry Regiment in 1751 as a cornet, where he became a first lieutenant and regimental adjutant in 1755. In 1758, during the troop assembly in Holstein, Leth, who had distinguished himself through his service and abilities, served as adjutant in the Rieppur cavalry brigade. In 1759, he was promoted to captain, and in 1762, to major and squadron commander in the newly established Hussar Regiment. Following the dissolution of the regiment in 1767, he transitioned to the infantry, assuming the rank of major in Prince Frederik's Regiment. Subsequently, he was promoted to the rank of lieutenant colonel in 1779. However, in 1784, he was transferred to Zealand, and in 1789, he assumed the rank of colonel in the Opland infantry regiment and the Crown Prince's Regiment as commander. In 1795, he was also appointed commander in Copenhagen and promoted to major general; in 1801, he was honoured with the Order of Dannebrog. During the troop assembly in Holstein in 1805-06, Leth commanded the 1st Infantry Brigade and remained on the peninsula as commander of a general command district around Kiel until 1810, when he was dismissed from military service as Lieutenant General.

Latin text:
Christianus Septimus Dei Gratia Rex Daniæ. Norvegiæ Vandalorum Gothorumque Dux Slesvici Holsatiæ Stormariæ Ditmarsice ac Oldenburgie.
His Lithris patentibus. Johannum Friederichum de Leth... utad pasteros singularis gratia benevolentiæque qua ipsum complectimur memoria transmittatur , Sceptre Nosti apirem porreximus, Eumque in numerum Auratorum Ordinis Dannebrogici Equitum recipimus comtamus

To English:
Christian the Seventh, by the Grace of God, King of Denmark. Duke of Norway, of the Vandals and Goths, of Schleswig, Holstein, Stormarn, Ditmarschen and Oldenburg.
By these patent letters. We openly testify the name of Ourselves, Our Heirs, and Our Successors; and make it known to all and sundry.
For indeed, no greater incentive to virtue is given than honour and glory, and noble hearts are then at last driven with bolder impetus towards the temple of honour and glory, and strive for fame through illustrious deeds, when they feel themselves fully endowed by the touch of the Royal Sceptre and Purple. Therefore, We have also extended Our Sceptre to Our illustrious ...... John Friederich de Leth... so that the singular grace and benevolence with which We embrace him may be transmitted to posterity, and We receive him into the number of Knights of the Order of the Dannebrog.

Comments:
There are a small part I cannot read and marked ......  And the lower line of text is covered by a later name of the name of the auction house.   I will try to get better photos of this so a better translation can be performed.
