He financed nine scientific expeditions to Antarctica (including the Norvegia expeditions) and participated in four of them himself. He also donated the Whaling Museum in Sandefjord and the Maritime Museum in Oslo. During World War II, Christensen served as financial advisor to the Norwegian Embassy in the United States for a period of six years, in addition to his role as a member of the Nortraships council.
The volcano Lars Christensentoppen on Peter I Island, which was explored by two expeditions initiated by Christensen, is named after him. It is evident that the Christensenbreen glacier on Bouvet Island is also named after Christensen (5).
The following section outlines the awards received:

In 1927, he was awarded the Gunners' Medal, and in 1935, he was honoured with the David Livingstone Centenary Medal. He was also made Commander of the Order of Vasa, Commander of the Order of St. Olav, and Knight of the Order of Dannebrog.

Provost William James Merson was awarded the St Olav Knight during the Second World War in London. With a Norwegian government and the Royal Family in exile in London it was decided to produce a very small number of awards by Spink in London. These were all made of gilted silver or silver and are very rare today. All with the Spink hallmarks.
William James Merson (1879-1953) was the long-serving Provost of Buckie at the time of the Second World War. He led the civic response to the conflict and perhaps more than anyone set the tone of welcoming hospitality towards the Norwegian and Danish communities. This ranged for finding accommodation for the Norwegian to civic events but, perhaps most importantly, creating an open and welcoming culture for allies.
He was born on 20 January 1879 to George Merson, a draper and fishcurer, and his wife Elizabeth (Betsy) Marshall. The Marshalls were a very well-known Buckie family having a ropemaking business.
