Dannebrog Commander Stars

Order of Dannebrog

Denmark

1748-2025

This chapter shows you different Dannebrog Commander Stars. I have been looking and digging for information through the last 30 years to understand a bit of this history. My focus is to display the variations of these beautiful pieces of art.

I must among others thank the huge inventory at Livrustkammaren in Stockholm Sweden. They have a huge collection of historical pieces with historical information.  As you see on this page a lot of the photos are still in black and white. Hopefully one day one will have more of these photos in high resolution color.  They have iincluded the history of these pieces and on many the dimensions are included. Unfortunately the weight of the pieces are missing. I am sure this will be available one day.

The Livrustkammaren is located next to the Royal Castle in Stockholm. I have visited their exhibitions several times. Very nice and and very interesting. About 20 years ago I was to have meetings with them and also having a real look at their vaults.  Unfortuntely Radon gas had been measured at too high levels and the old vaults were closed for all visits for years.  Still we had some very good meetings and discussed their collection of orders.  Since then they have moved their photos from their old website and now you find most of it on Wikimedia Commons, Europeana, Omnia.ie, etc.  Hopefully what you find there will be on these pages, plus alot more.

Lot 1881: Estimate of 500 EUR, sold for 900 EUR.

DENMARK, metallic plate of Commander of the Order of Dannebrog, mounted on screws, in silver.
Often of Russian production, with a round screw on plate in the back from 1890 and onwards.

During a period when the Chancellery of the Danish Orders was still officially issuing embroidered plates, manufacturers took the initiative to produce more practical metal plates that could be attached to clothing. The chancellery swiftly adopted these innovations.

Army, comprising 22 battalions of infantry and a division of cavalry, on 29.9.1855. He then volunteered to take command of the most vulnerable positions, and 'during the hottest part of the action', having rallied his men, 'led the final charge which completed the victory of the Day'; having forced the Russians to resort to guerrilla warfare, Teesdale was finally taken prisoner of war when the city could hold out no longer, 28.11.1855; in later life, he was equerry to H.R.H. Description Denmark, Order of the Dannebrog, Commanders breast star, a non-Danish made piece with French post-1893 import mark on retaining pin, in silver, gilt and red enamel, 89 x 68mm, chip on upper part of right limb, good very fine

Here is an interesting issue:  This beautiful example of the Dannebrog Commander Star is also shown in the beginning of this section as: Sold at Christies London 12 November 1992.  Tracking: D089x. Date estimated at 1825-1859.
Please note that the first one is shown in black and white.  Note that it is difficult to tie in all details.  But on top of the right arm there is a damage to the red enamel which proves these two photos are the same. Dating could be very difficult.

Silver plate backing of the embroidered star. The halmarks are to the left the date 00=1900 also stating Copenhagen.  Then the AM halmark of the jeweller A. Michelsen. The last hallmark is 925 which is the silver stamp.
This is a nice example where the jewellers stamp says it is made after 1848.
The next Commander star is similar, but it also carries a clear 1900 stamp to underline the correct date.

On October 9, 1909, King Frederik VIII (1843-1912, reigning since 1906) ordered by royal resolution that in future breast stars or crosses should no longer be officially awarded with embroidery, but instead with metal ones. Until then, the metal versions were the responsibility of individual private procurement by the borrowers; since 1884, however, Christian IX. metal designs for private use were approved, but they also had to be procured privately. These pectoral crosses show a large wealth of variants.

There was a black and white photo attached to the auction catalogue of Sotheby's 25th and 26th March 1997. Object item 487 was a Dannebrog set of insignia. This was not illustrated in the catalogue. As the enclosed photo was attached to this page it may be assumed that this was the commander star of the set being sold. If that is the case then this was from the Christian IX period 1863-1906. This is still the period when these private stars were made for the Danish orders. If this is from the set of object 487 then it had been awarded to Rear Admiral Christian Frederik Scheller (1849-1917).  He was the adjutant to King Christian IX of Denmark during the period of 1892-1905.
